On 21st November, Ukraine commemorates the Day of Dignity and Freedom, marking two protests nine years apart as part of the struggle to become independent of Russia. For our dance session on that day, I have written a circle dance to the music of Ukraine’s traditional folk dance, Hopak. There will be a live band and refreshments from Eastern Europe. All money from the raffle will be donated to the Red Cross Ukraine Appeal. Tickets are now on sale. Price £10. To reserve yours, fill out the contact form or telephone/text 07463607360, then pay on the door. What is Contra dancing? A contra dance is a fun social event, in which everyone can take part. Dancers line up in pairs, but you don’t need to bring your own partner. If you come on your own, you won’t be left sitting on the sidelines. Contra dances are commonly held throughout the United States, although the dances have their origins in English and Scottish country dance, and French dance styles of the 17th century. No previous experience is needed and there is no fancy footwork to learn. Walk or skip - it’s up to you. Each dance contains about six and or seven simple figures which I explain before the music starts and I continue to call throughout the dance. Our afternoon sessions are tailored to the needs of retired people: we go at a gentle pace, all the steps are called - no need to remember them - and a cup of tea and a biscuit in the interval. When and where do you dance? The 1st and 3rd Thursdays, 2 - 4 pm at the Orpington Liberal Club, 7 Station Rd, Orpington BR6 0RZ Can I come on my own? Yes! You will be made very welcome. Everyone's friendly and we all dance with each other, so you'll soon get to know the group. Who's it for? We welcome everyone, whether you have been dancing for years or are new to it. Many of our dancers are retired. How do I get there? Car: The postcode is BR5 0RZ. There is some parking in front of the hall, and further parking in Tesco opposite. Train: Orpington Station is a short walk away. Go down the hill and the hall is on your left. Bus: Bus to Orpington High Street, memorial bus stop. The hall is a few yards away up the hill, on the left, opposite Tesco. I've just had a knee replacement. Will I be able to dance? Yes. You don't have to skip or hop. Many people walk the dances. Read how dancing helped me recover from a road accident What does it cost? £5. Pay on the door. What should I wear? Loose, relaxing clothing. Ladies: skirt and blouse, trousers, dress. Men: trousers, shirt or T-shirt. Comfortable shoes that won't fall off when you dance! Do I have to remember the dances? No, first we walk through the dances, then the instructions are called as you dance. Do I have to book? No. Pay on the door, with the exception of the barn dance on 21st November. Do you get paid for running Juice of Barley? No. All money received goes to paying the running costs. Can you call for a dance I'm putting on? Yes. I have an extensive range of material. Whatever your level of skill, I have some exciting dances and wonderful tunes to make your dance go with a swing. I look forward to seeing you. Janet |
